Securely attached

Asking for help and being alone are both possible. This is the most common of the four styles, and it does not mean having less anxiety or better relationships.

You need neither of the two workbooks. Both are written for high values on one of the two scales, and with this result the purchase would be money you are better off keeping. The sentence stands here because it is true and not because it sounds good. What follows is still worth something: what «secure» actually means, what it does not mean, and what it costs to be the calm one in a relationship.

Does this sound familiar?

Secure attachment rarely stands out, because it does not feel like anything. You notice it mostly by a particular effort being absent.

  • You say that something bothered you, and you do not expect it to be over because of that. The sentence takes courage. It does not take the ground from under your feet.

  • An argument is uncomfortable but not threatening. For the other three styles it is exactly this difference that is enormous.

  • You can ask for something without checking three phrasings first. And if a no comes, it is a no to the thing and not to you.

  • When someone does not write for a day, you think they are busy. Not out of discipline. It is simply the first explanation that shows up.

  • Being alone is sometimes nice and sometimes boring, but not threatening. It is the same with closeness.

  • People tell you things and you are not quite sure why. Because you do not start regulating yourself while they do. People notice that.

What «secure» actually means

And above all what it does not mean. The term keeps getting read as a top grade, and it is not one.

01

An assumption, not a trait

It goes: I am allowed to need something, and the other person stays anyway. Everything else follows from that, the composure in conflict as much as the asking without a run-up.

Which is why this assumption can also shift, in both directions
02

Not less anxiety

Securely attached people have fear of loss, jealousy and bad nights. The difference is not in the strength of the feeling but in the fact that it is not read as proof.

03

Not better relationships

There are separations here too, wrong choices and years that were not good. Attachment style says something about your own pattern and nothing about the quality of what comes of it. That always takes two.

04

Not an achievement

It is largely the result of circumstances nobody chose: temperament, the load on the parents in particular years, luck. So it is no use as an argument against somebody for whom it went differently.

What it costs to be the calm one

The part that is almost always missing from descriptions of this style. Secure attachment has a bill too, it just arrives somewhere else.

You become the regulator

Whoever does not panic becomes the person everyone offloads onto: in friendships, in the family, at work. That role usually grew unnoticed and is rarely renegotiated.

You underestimate what runs in others

Because «just ask once» genuinely is enough for you, it sounds plausible that it is enough for everyone. With high attachment anxiety the question has to get past an alarm system, and advice that overlooks this hurts more than it helps.

Your own strain comes last

Whoever seems reliably stable rarely gets asked. And whoever rarely gets asked gets used to saying nothing. That is where an avoidant pattern starts, even from low baselines.

Under pressure it looks different

Attachment patterns have a stable core with temporary values moving above it. In a difficult phase the same test can come out differently for you. That is not a relapse but a measurement of a different moment.

What you can do with it

Three things, none of which costs anything.

Read the other patterns, not yours

The use of this result lies less with you than with the people around you. Once you understand what happens mechanically with high attachment anxiety and with high avoidance, you hear something different in the same sentences.

Concretely «You are too needy» and «you are so cold» are both wrong, and both are the most common reaction. Whoever knows the mechanism does not get there in the first place.

Pass the test on

Four minutes, free, no sign-up, and the result stays in the browser. For someone with one of the insecure patterns running, the description is often the first time it does not read like a character flaw.

Look at the detailed questionnaire

The test here is a short form with twelve statements. The detailed instrument used in research is the ECR-R, freely available through the materials page of R. Chris Fraley at the University of Illinois.

If the subject interests you The ECR-R measures the same two dimensions with considerably more statements, and it is the basis the numbers in the workbooks rest on.

And if you are reading for somebody else

That happens more often than the own case. Both workbooks show three pages openly, and the homepage has the table of contents. So you can see beforehand whether it suits the person you have in mind. Note that both are written in German.

With this result too: if you are in a very bad place right now, a questionnaire is the wrong tool. These Swiss numbers are staffed around the clock.
